Gluten free spicy lamb meatballs

This recipe is an absolute pleasure to cook. Your kitchen will be filled with the delicious aromas of freshly toasted cumin and coriander seed, bringing an otherwise simple lamb dish to life. A great recipe for the barbeque and perfect for last minute entertaining. Also a winner in the lunchbox.

SERVES: 4-6 PREP TIME: 30 mins COOK TIME: 10 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons coriander seeds
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 20 grams fresh mint, finely chopped
  • 1 lemon, juice only
  • 500 grams lamb mince
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 green chilli, or to taste

Method

  1. On your stovetop place a heavy based saucepan on medium to high heat.

  2. Add the spices to the pan and toast for 2 minutes or until fragrant.

  3. Remove from heat and crush using a pestle and mortar or pulse in a blender enjoying the aromas whilst placing to one side.

  4. In a large bowl add the water, garlic, crushed spices, egg, lemon juice and mint and mix well.

  5. Add the lamb mince and massage into the mix until well combined - You can use gloves to mix this in, otherwise a fork can do the job just as well.

  6. Roll and shape into 16 meatballs (if time permits, chill for 15-20 minutes).

  7. Heat the olive oil in a non-stick saucepan on medium heat.

  8. Sauté the meatballs until golden brown and cooked (around 8 to 10 minutes), turning them every so often.

Inspiration

  • To complete your spicy meatballs experience with a favorite dipping sauce, try serving with Harissa paste for a little more heat, or a delightful Beetroot dip or Hummus dip.
  • Can mix up the spices and herbs by replacing some with fresh finely chopped rosemary, oregano and parsley.
  • You can also try some lemon or lime zest in there as well to give it another flare.
