The Agelessness of Agelessness
The Agelessness of Agelessness
The Agelessness of Agelessness – 21 students of The Livingness share their experience of ageing
Well before we hit mid-life, the process of socialisation has already given most of us a set of expectations, pictures, ideals, beliefs, and fears about ageing (usually referred to as ‘growing old’). Almost none of them are positive. Even as a student of The Ageless Wisdom, I had to admit that I still held on tightly to many of these narratives myself. They included fears such as ‘you are going to run out of money and not be able to survive, you will die alone, your body is only going to fall apart as you get older, life will become increasingly meaningless, it will be very hard to find work I enjoy or a meaningful intimate relationship with the opposite sex once I pass 50 years of age’ … and many, many more. Sadly, I’ve seen people around me, including those in my extended family, live lives that confirmed or supported these fears.
Given that I’ve been living the principles of The Ageless Wisdom in my life for some time, and have been doing really well, I didn’t think I would learn much from this book. I was wrong.
In twenty-one brief chapters covering all aspects of life, the authors put all of these false beliefs about the process of ageing, and more, to rest. When I completed the book, I felt a settlement of knowing that regardless of whatever the circumstances of my life may turn out to be, the quality of my life in the future is assured by consistently living the principles of The Ageless Wisdom as demonstrated in the lived experiences of the elders in this book.
I want to point out that this isn’t a self-help book, and so you won’t find checklists, tips or advice on living life. Instead, what is shared is far more valuable; embodied wisdom that only comes as a result of living lovingly from one’s innermost connection. I’m fortunate enough to personally know several of the chapter authors. Almost all of those I know look ten to twenty years younger than their biological age, and have a level of purposefulness, vitality, spunk, and joy that is rare for people their age. Even though you may never meet them in person, through their contributions in this book, you can have a taste of the richness that is possible to live in the second half of one's life.
And, whilst the specific details of one’s life will always differ from person to person, what this book powerfully communicates is the equality in the essence of enrichment that is possible for us all when we lovingly live, without perfection, the principles of the Ageless Wisdom.
In short, this book gave me the priceless gift of knowing I have nothing to fear in the decades of my life yet to be lived, and I wholeheartedly wish the same for you.
