Review of: ‘Excerpts from a Post-War Life’ by JK Rolls
What I noticed immediately about this book was that it gives you the story in bite-sized chunks. As a bedtime read it was perfect for me, it was enough to get my teeth into and definitely did not send me to sleep. Each night I read a clear and unambiguous episode of JK Rolls growing up, much like a TV series. Not only did the topics provide very captivating perspectives of growing up but they also showed a wider view of the world to reflect upon. As it happened, I was going on a long journey when I was part-way through reading the book, so along it went into my carry-on luggage, accompanying me on my journey.
Halfway through my 21-hour flight, I took the book out and finished reading it in one sitting as I found myself being deeply affected and touched by Rolls’s story in several places. This is a story that runs deep into the prevailing post-war consciousness immediately after World War II and enables the reader to relate through the personal impact on the author of family life and experiences. This time in history is something that can be taken for granted as one of celebration, due to the ending of the war, but with this book we read of the tale that has a strong social commentary on that period of history, which Rolls grew up in. It is written with a very real and down-to-earth perspective. While the main character was portrayed as a post-war child, what was abundantly clear was that he was no child at all but an innately wise observer of life.
Rolls evidently has a very strong sense of what is truth and what are lies, and this was reflected in his understanding of how families and society functioned.
Although at times reactive to what he witnessed and experienced (as we all can be on occasion!), he was able to be the observer all through his parental separation and childhood in post war England. His innate knowing of truth was a strength, a substance and a sound foundation which supported him as he moved forward in a life that was both tumultuous and challenging.
Rolls’s integrity and awareness allowed him to see a very clear lack of integrity within the political arena. He was unmoved by the promoted rhetorics and instead saw through its thin façade, straight to the lies underneath. His true integrity shone through the whole book and was the key in every theme. This was reflected in how he embodied the Ageless Wisdom and its unfolding in his life. Rolls was on a clear trajectory to return to who he is in his full grandness. I was deeply touched by his description of his return, of his meeting and marriage to his wife and the beauty of his life now. Rolls’s openness and transparency totally melted me as I read on.
“Excerpts from a Post-War Life” was a great read. It was illuminating, inspiring and touched me to the core. Thank you JK Rolls for your inspiration of a life lived with truth and love. It made my journey to the other side of the world one of joy and remains with me today.
