Quick solutions and instant weight loss: looking for the magic pill?

We are always looking for quick solutions, the quick fix, the instant weight loss, instant belly-fat removal without surgery – an instant solution to an out-of-control problem.

We keep looking outside of ourselves to others to find solutions, to make a ‘better’ version of us – and to give us a way that is quick and easy.

There is a billion pound diet industry out there built on saying they can do just that, but has any of it worked? No!

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?

Some experts believe obesity is responsible for more ill health than smoking. Being significantly overweight is linked to a wide range of health problems, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Arthritis
  • Indigestion
  • Gallstones
  • Some cancers (breast and prostate cancers)
  • Snoring and sleep apnoea
  • Stress, anxiety and depression

We are told that being fat is not good for our health. We are told it’s a problem that we have such sedentary lives and don’t consistently exercise.

Could there be truth in this?

  • Is it true that we don’t pay attention to our body and keep it in good condition?

  • Is it true that we just expect our body to carry us no matter how we treat it?

  • Do we eat and drink what we like with no regard for the consequences?

If we treated our cars the way we treat our bodies, they would break down, yet we expect the body, which is our ‘vehicle’, to just keep going without any care. We hate to be stopped by it and are always surprised when the body does stop us with an illness or disease, so much so that we will take any amount of pills, painkillers and medications to keep us going.

The body always shows us the way we are living – it can’t do anything else. But that level of honesty is confronting and more often than not, we prefer not to look, let alone admit it. Sometimes it has to get so bad that it stops us altogether, as it does, for example, with joint problems that affect our mobility. The ‘stop’ happens when we ignore what our body is telling us.

THERE ARE NO QUICK SOLUTIONS

Have you noticed that when we reach a point of overweight and dissatisfaction with our lives or when life is saying Stop! – then we want it all to go away? We want it all fixed with the magic pill – the instant fix. All of that is easier and more appealing than holding our hands up and facing the truth that it’s our lack of responsibility and care for ourselves that has created the problem in the first place.

For example: When I was a child I was overweight. I used to imagine I had a magic wand and could cast a spell to make all my fat disappear. To look for a solution for our weight gain without looking at ourselves and what patterns and behaviours caused the weight in the first place, does not seem to work. I never found the wand but I did discover another way.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

There’s no way around it, we can deny it and ignore it, but eventually we have to stop and look at why we live in a way that makes us have our body fat and all its associated problems.

It’s always the way we live that gives us the body we get to have. Facing up to this is our first step in the process of change.

WE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE

As we begin to take small steps to care for ourselves, we find we do have the power to change how we live. This is a very powerful realisation. We can make these changes in our lives that impact on our body.

It’s the small and even minute choices we make that all add up to give us the body we have, a body that supports us.

There are no quick solutions to obtain instant weight loss and there’s no such thing as ‘The Magic Pill’ ...

The Quick Fixes – the instant weight loss and instant belly-fat removal without surgery – are promises the diet industry cannot keep. Where diet and weight loss is concerned, there are no quick solutions, but we can make changes which impact on the rest of our lives.

In fact, if we stop what is driving the weight gain in the first place, then we can create lasting change. Just hitting the surface symptoms through a diet, does not affect the underlying reasons why the weight is there.

So what do we do?
